My brother Nathan and I have been working with small business owners for over 15 years, and we found a problem. Compliance with taxes, specifically income taxes, is a BIG problem. Not only is it time consuming and expensive, it's almost impossible to know whether it's being done right. Many small business owners choose to hire an expert such as a CPA, but how do you know if they are doing it correctly?
That's why we developed the Brim Rating. We've researched thousands of tax returns from all over the country to determine a score that will tell a business owner how likely it is that there return will be audited by the IRS.
First a little history. The IRS guards their secrets closely. The process which they use to select returns for audits is based upon a return's DIF score. How they actually compute this score is known by a very few people at the highest level of the IRS. In 1996, a statistician by the name of Dr. Amir Aczel reverse engineered the DIF score for individual returns and published them in his book How to Beat the IRS at its Own Game. This caused us to think, why not do the same thing for business returns. We searched high and low, and no one had tackled the problem. That led us to develop the Brim Rating.
The best part is that we are continually evaluating our rating system. The information that you share in confidence with us is used to fine tune our process. The IRS can change the way they determine the DIF score, so unlike Dr. Aczel work, ours is ongoing, and deals exclusively with company tax returns. If the IRS changes the way they compute their score, our rating will reflect that.
